Date Night in Southport: A Great Night Out That Won’t Cost a Fortune

The Gold Coast's best-kept secret for a night out for two

Date night planning on the Gold Coast can get expensive fast. Between parking, cocktail prices and a main course that somehow costs $45, a casual Tuesday becomes a budgeting exercise. But it doesn’t have to be that way – not if you know where to go.

SoPo in Southport has quietly become one of the Gold Coast’s most underrated spots for a night out for two. It’s got the food, the atmosphere, the drinks and the entertainment – all under one roof, without the price tag that usually comes with it.

Whether you’re planning a proper date night or just a relaxed midweek dinner with someone you like spending time with, here’s how to make a night of it at SoPo.

Start with dinner – and pick your night wisely

The smartest thing you can do for a date night at SoPo is choose your day based on what’s on the specials board. Every night of the week has something worth coming in for, and the prices are genuinely hard to argue with.

If Tuesday works, the 2-for-1 dinner special is the obvious move. Order from the chef’s specials board between 5:00pm and 8:00pm and the second meal is free. That’s two proper plates for the price of one – which frees up the budget nicely for a round of drinks.

Wednesday brings Schnitzel and Parmi Night, with schnitzels from $19 and parmigiana from $21 at Palm Springs, SoPo’s signature bistro. Both come with chips and coleslaw, and there’s a solid lineup of toppers – garlic prawns, bacon, jalapeños and guacamole, ham and pineapple – so you can build it out however you like. It’s the kind of food that’s comforting without being boring, and the evening runs from 5:00pm through to 8:30pm.

Thursday is $16 Steak Night. A properly cooked steak with sides at that price is the kind of thing that makes a weeknight dinner feel like a treat, without you needing to think too hard about what’s happening to your bank account.

Prefer Friday? Pizza Paradise runs every Friday from 12:00pm to 5:00pm – $19 pizzas, easy and unfussy. And if you’re leaning into a later dinner on Friday, the $15 Fish and Chips from Palm Springs runs from 5:00pm to 8:30pm.

Drinks without the markup

One of the quieter wins at SoPo is the bar. The cocktail list is solid, the staff know what they’re doing, and you’re not paying city-centre Surfers Paradise prices for the pleasure. Settle in with a cocktail or two before dinner, or linger over drinks after your meal – the space is set up for exactly that kind of evening.

For something a little more low-key, SoPo Brews is the in-house café and lounge – great for a coffee and a bite if you’re arriving early or want to ease into the evening before heading to Palm Springs for dinner.

Add some entertainment to the mix

This is where SoPo genuinely sets itself apart. Most nights, there’s something happening beyond the dinner table, and a lot of it is free.

The Tribute Series in the SOPO Beats Showroom brings free live shows to the venue on Friday nights – recent bookings have included Aussie rock tributes and other touring acts, all at no cost to walk in. It’s the kind of thing that turns dinner into a proper night out.

Monday nights run free trivia from 7:00pm – a surprisingly good date activity if you want something to do with your hands while you talk and argue about whether that answer was actually right.

Live music also runs across the week at SoPo, with solo and duo acts playing daytime and evening sets throughout the venue. Check the SoPo events calendar before you head in so you know what’s on the night you’re going.

Making a night of it – a simple plan

The beauty of SoPo is that everything is in one place. You don’t need to move venues, call an Uber between stops or work out where to go next. A good date night here looks something like this: arrive a little early, grab a drink at the bar, head into Palm Springs for dinner during the specials window, then stay on for live music or entertainment in the Beats Showroom.

That’s a full evening – food, drinks, entertainment – and you’ve done it without a reservation at somewhere expensive and without the stress of trying to make a whole night happen across three different postcodes.

Plan your visit

SoPo is at 36 Scarborough Street, Southport, right in the heart of the Gold Coast’s northern hub. It’s open from 10:00am through to 4:00am daily, so there’s no need to rush. Dining specials run from 5:00pm each evening – arrive a touch before the rush if you want a good table.

It suits couples, small groups, and anyone who wants a relaxed evening with good food and solid entertainment. Members get access to additional perks, so if you’re a regular or planning to be, it’s worth looking into.
